I'll admit something.
Years ago, if I was buying a supplement, I did what I think a lot of us do.
I'd flip the bottle around.
Look at the ingredients.
Maybe check the dosage.
Read a few reviews.
And that was pretty much it.
If one bottle said it contained Vitamin D and another bottle said it contained Vitamin D, I assumed...
Well, they're both Vitamin D.
What's the difference?
Turns out, there's a lot more to a supplement than the pretty label on the front of the bottle.
Where ingredients come from, the form of an ingredient, how much is included and how the overall formula is put together can all matter.
And once you start paying attention to those things, you look at the supplement aisle a little differently.
So today, I want to talk about something that doesn't sound particularly glamorous...
Ingredient sourcing.
I promise I'll make it interesting. 😂
Because if you're spending your hard-earned money on supplements every month, you deserve to understand what you're actually buying.
What does "ingredient sourcing" actually mean?
Let's start here because it sounds much more complicated than it is.
Ingredient sourcing is essentially where and how a company obtains the ingredients used to make its products.
Think about food.
Two restaurants can both have "salmon" on the menu.
But that doesn't mean the fish came from the same place, was handled the same way or is the exact same quality.
The same general idea applies when we talk about supplement ingredients.
Seeing the name of an ingredient on a Supplement Facts panel only tells you part of the story.
There's also the source of that ingredient, the form that's being used, how much is included and what other ingredients it's being combined with.
That's why I don't think we should look at supplements as simply a list of trendy ingredients.
The details matter too.
Are supplements regulated by the FDA?
Let's clear this one up because there's a LOT of confusion around it.
Dietary supplements are regulated by the FDA in the United States.
However, the FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety and effectiveness before they're sold in the same way it approves medications.
That's an important distinction.
It also means I think we should be thoughtful consumers.
Instead of assuming every bottle on the shelf is essentially interchangeable, take a few extra minutes to understand what you're buying.
Turn the bottle around.
Look at the formula.
Read the Supplement Facts.
Learn a little about the company behind it.
You don't have to become a scientist.
You just need to become a slightly more curious shopper.
Why does supplement ingredient sourcing matter?
Here's the simplest way I can explain it:
The ingredient list is the beginning of the conversation, not the end of it.
Let's say you're comparing two supplements.
Both contain the same botanical.
Both have beautiful packaging.
Both have a paragraph on the front telling you how incredible you're going to feel.
At first glance?
They look pretty similar.
But the formulas themselves may be very different.
They may use different amounts.
Different forms.
Different combinations of ingredients.
Or have completely different reasons for why those ingredients were chosen in the first place.
That's why I always encourage women to look beyond the big promises on the front.
1. The actual ingredient matters
This sounds ridiculously obvious.
But hear me out.
It's very easy to shop for supplements by recognizing one ingredient.
"Oh! I've heard Biotin is good for hair."
Into the cart it goes.
😂
But one recognizable ingredient doesn't tell you everything about the supplement.
What else is in the formula?
How much of that ingredient does one serving contain?
What form is being used?
What other ingredients is it paired with?
That's why reading the actual Supplement Facts panel is so much more useful than simply scanning the front of the bottle.
2. More ingredients doesn't automatically mean a better supplement
This is a BIG one.
Have you ever looked at a supplement with an ingredient list approximately the length of a CVS receipt?
It looks impressive.
Twenty ingredients!
Thirty ingredients!
Forty-seven different herbs!
Surely more must mean better?
Not necessarily.
Personally, I'd rather understand why an ingredient is in a formula than see a company cram in every trendy ingredient they can fit on the label.
More isn't always better.
And an enormous ingredient list doesn't automatically tell you anything about how thoughtfully that formula was put together.
Sometimes simple and intentional makes far more sense.
3. Pay attention to the amount per serving
Here's another mistake that's incredibly easy to make.
You see an ingredient you recognize on the label and think:
Perfect!
But look a little closer.
How much is actually in one serving?
And while you're there...
What's considered a serving?
One capsule?
Two?
Four?
These are the little details that are easy to miss when you're standing in an aisle trying to compare five bottles at once.
It's why I always say:
Don't just look at what is included.
Look at how much is included too.
4. "Natural" doesn't automatically tell you everything
Ohhhh, the word natural.
We LOVE that word.
Put "natural" on a bottle next to a green leaf and suddenly everything feels wonderfully wholesome. 😂
But don't let one pretty word do all your decision-making for you.
"Natural" doesn't tell you everything about the ingredients, amounts, formulation or whether a particular supplement is right for you.
I'd much rather you flip that bottle over and see what's actually inside.
Read the Supplement Facts.
Look at the ingredient list.
Understand what you're buying.
Pretty packaging is nice.
Knowing what's inside is nicer.
5. Where an ingredient comes from can matter
This is where we get back to sourcing.
Ingredients don't magically appear inside capsules.
Vitamins, minerals, herbs and botanical extracts all have to come from somewhere.
And particularly with plant-based ingredients, there can be a whole journey before that ingredient ever reaches the finished bottle.
That's one of the reasons I find sourcing so interesting.
When you see something like Horsetail Extract or Japanese Knotweed on a label, you're seeing the final name.
You're not seeing everything that happened before that.
And as consumers, I think it's worth remembering that there's more behind an ingredient than its name on a label.
6. The cheapest supplement isn't automatically the best value
I understand wanting to save money.
Believe me.
Supplements can get expensive FAST.
And I also want to be clear:
Expensive doesn't automatically mean better either.
A beautiful $80 bottle isn't necessarily superior because someone put it in frosted glass and hired a fantastic photographer.
What I don't recommend is choosing based on price alone.
Compare the formulas.
Compare serving sizes.
Look at the amounts.
Look at what's actually included.
Look at how long one bottle lasts.
A $15 bottle isn't a bargain if you're not actually getting what you wanted from the formula.
And a $60 bottle isn't automatically amazing because it costs $60.
Look at the whole picture.
How can you choose a quality supplement?
Unfortunately, there's no single magic word on the label that tells you:
"THIS ONE! Buy this one!"
Wouldn't that make life easier? 😂
Instead, I think it's about asking better questions.
Start with the Supplement Facts panel
Not the gorgeous picture on the front.
Not the giant headline.
Not the leaves.
Turn it around.
Look at:
- The serving size
- The ingredients
- The amount of each ingredient
- The other ingredients
- How many servings are in the bottle
Those few pieces of information can tell you quite a bit.
Look for formulas that make sense
I love asking a really simple question:
Why is this ingredient here?
Does it fit with the purpose of the formula?
Do the ingredients make sense together?
Or does it feel like someone threw every currently popular ingredient into one bottle?
A long ingredient list might look impressive.
But I'd rather have a thoughtful formula than an impressive-looking label.
Look at the company behind the bottle
This matters to me too.
Can you figure out who's actually selling the product?
Does the company explain its ingredients?
Can you contact a real support team if you have a question?
Does the brand educate you about its products instead of simply screaming BUY THIS NOW!!! everywhere you look?
You don't have to know everything about a company.
But I think transparency and accessibility say a lot.
Be skeptical of miracle promises
This one might be the most important.
If a supplement claims it's going to solve every health problem you've had since 1987...
Please raise an eyebrow.
😂
Supplements can be one piece of supporting your overall wellness.
They don't need to be magic.
And I personally trust realistic information far more than outrageous promises.
What we think about when creating NewEra Naturals supplements
This subject became much more personal to me once I stopped being just a supplement customer.
Because now?
I put my name behind them.
When we create something at NewEra Naturals, I always think about the woman on the other end opening that bottle.
Maybe she's 43.
Maybe she's 57.
Maybe she's 68.
She's chosen to make our product part of her daily routine.
I don't take that lightly.
That's why we're thoughtful about the ingredients we choose and why they're included in each formula.
I'm not interested in stuffing dozens of trendy ingredients into a bottle simply so we can make the label look impressive.
I want the formula to make sense.
Take NewEra Protect, for example.
Protect was created specifically with women's bladder health in mind. Its formula includes ingredients such as Crataeva, Japanese Knotweed, Horsetail, Sumac and Boswellia, along with Vitamin D3 and Zinc.
Those ingredients weren't chosen because they're the trendiest words on Instagram.
They're part of a formula created around a very specific purpose: supporting women's bladder health.
Then there's NewEra Glow.
That's a completely different formula because it has a completely different goal.
Glow includes nutrients such as Biotin, Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, Vitamin E and Zinc to support hair, skin and nail health.
Different ingredients.
Different formulas.
Different purposes.
But the same basic philosophy:
Be thoughtful about what goes into the bottle.
Because you're the one taking it.
Questions to ask before buying your next supplement
You absolutely do NOT need to turn supplement shopping into a research project.
I don't want you standing in the vitamin aisle for three hours with 19 browser tabs open. 😂
Instead, start with a few simple questions:
- What's actually in this formula?
- How much of each ingredient am I getting?
- What's the serving size?
- Why are these particular ingredients included?
- Does the formula make sense for what I'm looking for?
- Does the company provide useful information about its ingredients?
- Can I easily contact the company if I have questions?
- Are the claims realistic?
Those questions alone can make you a much more informed supplement shopper.
My biggest advice when choosing supplements
Don't shop from the front of the bottle.
Shop from the back.
Ignore the gorgeous packaging for a minute.
Turn it around.
Read.
Ask questions.
Look beyond buzzwords like "premium," "natural," "advanced" and "breakthrough."
And remember that two bottles containing the same recognizable ingredient aren't automatically the same product.
Look at the formula as a whole.
Look at the amounts.
Look at the serving size.
Look at why those ingredients are there.
And learn a little about the company you're buying from.
Because there's a whole journey that happens before an ingredient ever reaches your supplement cabinet.
And while ingredient sourcing might not be the most exciting topic you'll read about today...
It's one worth understanding.
Especially when we're talking about something you're choosing to put into your body every single day.
You deserve to know what's in that bottle.
And you deserve companies willing to care about what goes into it.
